
Ophiuchus (pronounced off-ee-YOO-cuss) represents a man with a snake coiled around his waist. He holds the head of the snake in his left hand and its tail in his right hand. The snake is represented by the constellation Serpens.
Ophiuchus holds a huge snake, Serpens, in both hands as shown in the Atlas Coelestis of John Flamsteed. Serpens is unique in being divided into two halves.
The Greeks identified him as Asclepius, the god of medicine. Asclepius was the son of Apollo and Coronis (although some say that his mother was Arsinoë). The story goes that Coronis two-timed Apollo by sleeping with a mortal, Ischys, while she was pregnant by Apollo. A crow brought Apollo the unwelcome news, but instead of the expected reward the crow, which until then had been snow-white, was cursed by Apollo and turned black.
In a rage of jealousy, Apollo shot Coronis with an arrow. Rather than see his child perish with her, Apollo snatched the unborn baby from its mother’s womb as the flames of the funeral pyre engulfed her, and took the infant to Chiron, the wise centaur (represented in the sky by the constellation Centaurus).
Chiron raised Asclepius as his own son, teaching him the arts of healing and hunting. Asclepius became so skilled in medicine that not only could he save lives, he could also raise the dead. On one occasion in Crete, Glaucus, the young son of King Minos, fell into jar of honey and drowned while at play. As Asclepius contemplated the body of Glaucus, a snake slithered towards it. He killed the snake with his staff; then another snake came along with a herb in its mouth and placed it on the body of the dead snake, which magically returned to life. Asclepius took the same herb and laid it on the body of Glaucus, who too was magically resurrected. (Robert Graves suggests that the herb was mistletoe, which the ancients thought had great regenerative properties, but perhaps it was actually willow bark, the source of salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin.) Because of this incident, says Hyginus, Ophiuchus is shown in the sky holding a snake, which became the symbol of healing from the fact that snakes shed their skin every year and are thus seemingly reborn.
Others, though, say that Asclepius received from the goddess Athene the blood of Medusa the Gorgon. The blood that flowed from the veins on her left side was a poison, but the blood from the right side could raise the dead.
Someone else supposedly resurrected by Asclepius was Hippolytus, son of Theseus, who died when he was thrown from his chariot (some identify him with the constellation Auriga, the Charioteer). Reaching for his healing herbs, Asclepius touched the youth’s chest three times, uttering healing words, and Hippolytus raised his head.
Hades, god of the Underworld, began to realize that the flow of dead souls into his domain would soon dry up if this technique became widely known. He complained to his brother god Zeus who struck down Asclepius with a thunderbolt. Apollo was outraged at this harsh treatment of his son and retaliated by killing the three Cyclopes who forged Zeus’ thunderbolts. To mollify Apollo, Zeus made Asclepius immortal (in the circumstances he could hardly bring him back to life again) and set him among the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus.
The head of Ophiuchus is marked by its brightest star, second-magnitude Alpha Ophiuchi, called Rasalhague from the Arabic meaning ‘the head of the serpent collector’. Beta Ophiuchi is called Cebalrai from the Arabic for ‘the shepherd’s dog’; the Arabs visualized a shepherd (the star Alpha Ophiuchi) along with his dog and some sheep in this area. Ptolemy in the Almagest located Beta Ophiuchi in the serpent holder’s right shoulder, along with Gamma; the left shoulder is marked by Iota and Kappa Ophiuchi. A scattering of stars between the right shoulder of Ophiuchus and the tail of the serpent once formed the short-lived constellation Taurus Poniatovii.
Delta and Epsilon Ophiuchi are called Yed Prior and Yed Posterior. These are compound names, formed from the Arabic al-yad, meaning ‘hand’, with the Latin words Prior and Posterior added to give names meaning the ‘leading’ and ‘following’ parts of the hand, where Ptolemy had located them. The hand in question is the left one; the right hand, according to Ptolemy, was marked by the stars we now know as Nu and Tau Ophiuchi, but these have no proper names. Zeta and Eta Ophiuchi are his left and right knees, Rho and Theta Ophiuchi are in his feet.

The Zodiac
The 12 “star signs” the astrologers use are the constellations that fall on the ecliptic, otherwise referred to as the zodiac. The ecliptic is merely the path the sun seems to follow as the earth revolves around it. So, if on a certain date you looked at the sun, the current “star sign” would be the constellation directly behind the Sun.

The zodiac is “A belt on the celestial sphere, about 8° either side of the ecliptic, which forms the background for the motions of the Sun, Moon, and planets.” The ecliptic passes through more than 12 constellations, it passes through 13, the thirteenth being Ophiuchus. Why do the astrologers ignore poor old Ophiuchus? Probably because it is not a particularly bright constellation. But that does not change the fact that the ecliptic passes through 13 constellations, not 12.

The solar year has a little more than 364 days. The lunar month has just over 29 days. To reconcile these awkward figures the ancient astronomers devised a calendar of thirteen equal months, each of 28 days or four equal weeks. This calendar is all but regular, with the full moon falling one day and one hour later each month, and with only a small correction to be made at the end of the year.
The lunar months (or 'moon ths'), were represented in the skies by the constellations of the zodiac; and on the ground by a circle of trees in the sacred grove. Twelve of the signs of the zodiac are familiar to us from the astrology columns in the daily newspapers, but what happened to the thirteenth, and what was its symbol? This question can be answered by consulting the works of the ancient astronomers. Ptolemy of Alexandria gives the name of the constellation, and also the bearing and magnitude of the stars which form it. The constellation was called Ophicius (in Greek) and Serpentarius (in Latin). Both names mean 'snake-holder', and refer to the pythoness, the high priestess of the goddess temples. The symbol of this sign, a bare-breasted woman holding snakes, occurred in the Sumerian; Minoan, and other cultures of the Archaic period. Thus the missing month, the month that we disrupted an orderly calendar to avoid, was the month of the Goddess
Less familiar is the forgotten thirteenth sign, which lies "betwixt" them, Ophicius, the Snake-Holder, the symbol of which was a goddess or priestess brandishing two snakes, and which connoted the most important new moon in the goddess' lunar calendar. Milton, who also wrote the Book of Common Prayer used by Protestant congregations, has told us here in cryptic form that he was mindful that the Christian Satan (aka the Devil), was a new name given to an older but unmentionable deity, the goddess.

Now, while it is true that the ORIGIN of the word is indeed obscured and clouded in secrecy, it is primarily because Obeah, as implied above, is in itself clouded in secrecy --- being the remnant of a once very powerful and celebrated SECRET religious Order lost in the mist of time. Even so, slowly over the years clues have surfaced that indicate THAT particular secret religious Order emanated from a certain general geographical area. Moses, who escaped with his people out of Egypt with the full might of the Pharaoh's army hot on their heels all the way to the Red Sea --- where the army reportedly then drowned --- forbade in the name of God, the Israelites even to enquire about the demon Ob, which is translated in the first testament as a necromancer, wizard, or Diviner. In today's world the various translations are wide enough to encompass the type shaman-sorcerer that the infamous Yaqui Indian Don Juan Matus apprenticed under, a Diablero, a new-world tribal spiritual elder known to embody a sense of evilness and the ability to shapeshift. Moses himself carries a great deal of importance in all those translations, including right up to this day with Obeah. Even though Moses forbade enquiry into Ob amongst his people, he is seen as the ultimate snake-charmer and among the greatest of magicians. When Moses doubted he was really hearing the voice of God, he was asked what he was holding in his hand. When he replied that he was holding a rod, he is commanded to throw it to the ground. When he does, the rod becomes a serpent. When he picks it up it becomes a rod again. Later, under the direction of Moses, when Aaron throws his rod down before Pharaoh, it becomes a snake as well.(Exodus 7:1-16).....
Throughout the ancient world, the Middle East and Egypt, because of the brilliantly clear desert night skys, the stars and the constellations carried deep significance, both for the wandering tribes such as those following Moses and the great civilizations and city-states such as Babylonia, Sumeria, and Egypt. Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer is one of those desert-sky constellations. Most people pretty much know what the Zodiac is --- the constellations on the plane of the ecliptic through which the sun passes in the course of a year --- and what their "Sun Sign" is in relation to the Zodiac (i.e., Sagittarius, Taurus, etc.). What most people don't know is that there are actually thirteen Sun Signs, NOT twelve. According to the official modern constellation boundaries that astronomers use today, the sun passes through thirteen constellations, not twelve. The Greeks chose to remove one of the original thirteen constellations from the Zodiac in order to accomplish their desire to have each sign rule for an even 30º of sky, so they selected Ophiuchus to be eliminated. It can only be because of his origins in Egypt as one of their most powerful dieties, on par with Osiris and Thoth, all of whom answered only to Ra. Mysteriously enough, just like Obeah is secret, hidden, and unknown, the "thirteenth constellation" of the Zodiac, Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer is secret, hidden, and unknown. About one person in twenty is an "Ophiuchus," and they don't even know it.....
The peoples of ancient times (most typically the Pythagoreans, but others as well) had a legend that a kind of Light, described as a "living fire," flowed through all living things. Guarding this Flame was the serpent Ophioneus, very similar in respects to his nearly same namesake Ophiuchus. He was said to lay coiled in the Waters of Life. If anyone obstructed or hindered the Light of the Flame, Ophioneus would rise out of the water like a monster and consume them. The Greek philosopher Pherecydes (circa 600-550 BC) wrote a great deal about Ophioneus, having obtained the doctrines from the Phoenicians, also known as Ophites (Greece was first colonized by Ophites, serpent worshippers from both Egypt and Phoenicia). The Ophites venerated a serpent by the deity-title Ab, sometimes rendered Ob and Ob Aur, meaning Father --- as in the procreator of All. They also had the watery serpent Leviathan or Thiavat, which is same as Ophioneus. All of this ties into Abaddon that appears in Revelations as the Angel of the Abyss. It is unclear if the forces of the Abyss are fully good or evil in any way. The Obic forces that guard the Light and keep it flowing apparently take it by whatever means necessary and return it back to where it belongs when a person fails to let it flow or obstructs it.....

Well I'd add the obvious that the above misses out:
Ophiuchus had to go becuase it was a product of a Lunar calander (hence association with goddess) when all the sun worshiping blokes in skirts took charge of Pagan europe....

asian countries although following solar/georgian calendar for everyday life, business. use the lunar calendar for religous ceremonies.
this is a cool thread. i never realised the 13th sign existed etc. will have to read this in depth, great find.also goddess worhip, more based on the feminine qulaity of creation/birth than actual gender of enitities. also perfect pr, a vengeful god with a nice womanly facade.

The image of the serpent was tremendously significant in the ancient world. Societies and scriptures of the Near East simultaneously attributed two highly symbolic roles to serpents. One role connected serpents to the heavens by having them represent deity, creative powers, and healing. The other linked them with the underworld and associated them with evil, harm, and destructive influences. We who live in modern times have no difficulty appreciating this double symbol because, in fact, this duality persists in our own day. The symbol of the healing serpent appears on the physician's caduceus, while a person of disreputable actions—especially treachery—is sometimes referred to as "a snake."
Egyptian Evidence
one of the forms of the god Atum, believed to be a primeval creator deity, was the snake or serpent that continued to live season after season. In a fascinating dialogue with Osiris, the Egyptian god of the netherworld and of final judgment,[2] Atum predicts the destruction of the world he created and his own reversion back to the form of a serpent or snake.
Another primeval deity mentioned in the Pyramid Texts is Amun, one of whose two primary representations was that of the snake named Kematef (meaning "he who has completed his time").[5] After the Eleventh Dynasty (the Egyptian Middle Kingdom), Amun appeared as the god of the capital of Thebes and eventually merged with the sun god to be become known as Amun-Re, the supreme state god in the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1090 B.C.). At Karnak it was believed that Amun-Re and his divine consort, the goddess Mut, gave birth to a son named Khonsu. Mut is also symbolized as a snake and is called "Mut the resplendent serpent."[6] Thus the divine triad or family, the preeminent unit of social organization among the gods and humans according to the Egyptian worldview, was linked to the image of the serpent.
When corn was harvested and grapes pressed into wine, an offering was made to the harvest goddess, Thermuthis, who was depicted as either a snake or a woman with a serpent's head.[7] Geb, the god of the earth and "the father of the gods," is referred to as "the father of snakes" that emerge from the earth
Veneration of serpents or snakes in predynastic Egypt and during the Old Kingdom coalesced around the most important serpent-goddess of Lower Egypt: Wadjet. Wadjet (meaning "green one") was the general Egyptian term for cobra, and in that form she became the symbol of royalty and unification.
In opposition to all that was good in ancient Egypt, the most preeminent of all the demons, evil gods, or evil powers was Apophis, who was represented by a snake.
The Egyptian Book of the Dead fairly crawls with other serpent demons as well, sometimes winged or rearing up, occasionally even standing on legs and spitting fire.
Mesopotamian Evidence
The Sumerian god of spring vegetation, Tammuz, was linked to the image of the snake. Both he and his mother bore the title "mother-great-serpent of Heaven," that is, the serpent deity who emanated from the heaven god Anu.[16] The snake was also the sacred symbol of the god Ningizzida, who was called in Sumerian mythology "the companion of Tammuz.
Nidaba, was shown in representations with serpents (springing from her shoulders).
The greatest sovereign the Sumerians ever produced, King Gudea of the city-state Lagash, placed a representation of a serpent deity at the entrance of one of his temples around 2050 B.C., presumably to act as a guardian of the sacred edifice where life is renewed. Fourteen hundred years later, King Nebuchadnezzar II, ruler of the Neo-Babylonian empire (605–562 B.C.), dedicated the monumental Ishtar Gate of Babylon to the god Marduk with the following inscription:
(Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, son of) Nabopolassar (King of Babylon am I). The gate of Nana (Ishtar . . . I built) with (blue) enamelled bricks . . . for Marduk my lord. Lusty bulls of bronze and mighty figures of serpents I placed at their thresholds . . . Marduk, exalted lord . . . eternal life . . . give as a gift.
The forces of chaos are headed by none other than Tiamat, who is herself a female serpent (frequently referred to as a dragon).
Phoenician and Greek Evidence
Like the Greek deity Asclepius, Eshmun was the god of medicine whose symbol was a serpent.
Though Asclepius is also represented as a serpent in Greek portrayals, an actual Sidonian coin shows Eshmun leaning on a staff with a serpent entwined about it.
Sidonian depictions of Eshmun also parallel ancient Syrian representations of their god of healing, Shadrapa, whose image is that of the serpent.
The most important Minoan deity was the mother earth goddess of the city-state Knossos, or Cnossus, the capital of Cretan civilization. She is similar to fertility goddesses worshiped elsewhere in ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern cultures. On Crete she was usually depicted in small statue form as a woman holding a snake in each hand, with a bird perched on top of her head.
The Agathos Daimon was often depicted as a winged serpent and regarded as a good spirit.
Even the most famous example of the winged serpent motif outside of (but related to) the Near East, namely, the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl ("feathered serpent"), is impressive because that god was revered as the founder of priestly wisdom (almost as if the Aztecs were somehow familiar with Jesus' statement to be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" [Matthew 10:16]). Quetzalcoatl's high priests even bore the title "Prince of Serpents."

Ningizzida was a fertility god. Originally depicted as a serpent with a human head, Ningizzida became known as a magical god of healing.
Ningishzida is the earliest known symbol of snakes twining (some say in copulation) around an axial rod. It predates the Caduceus of Hermes, the Rod of Asclepius and the staff of Moses by more than a thousand years.

Medieval Christian art often depicted the Edenic Serpent as a woman, thus both emphasizing the Serpent's seductiveness as well as its relationship to Eve. (This connection might be due do the influence of Lilith, as well.) The Phoenician serpent god, alias Basilisk. The serpent, as well as the image of the sun, is always a phallic symbol in ancient religion. Basilisk is where the Roman Catholic Church got the name-- St. Peter's Basilica. Basilica is the old Greek name for the temple of the phallic god. How appropriate this is in view of the perpetual obsessions of the priests of "Mother Church." It also is well complimented by the obelisk in St. Peter's square which is a world wide phallic symbol complete with the phallic ball on top.

Particular Types of Serpents in Mythology
Dragons
Sometimes serpents and dragons are used interchangeably, having similar symbolic functions. The venom of the serpent is thought to have a fiery quality similar to a fire spitting dragon. The Greek Ladon and the Norse Níðhöggr are sometimes described as serpents and sometimes as dragons. In Germanic mythology, serpent (Old English: wyrm, Old High German: wurm, Old Norse: ormr) is used interchangeable with the Greek borrowing dragon (OE: draca, OHG: trahho, ON: dreki). In China, the Indian serpent nāga was equated with the lóng or Chinese dragon. The Aztec and Toltec serpent god Quetzalcoatl also has dragon like wings, like its equivalent in Mayan mythology Gukumatz ("feathered serpent").
Sea Serpents
Sea serpents were giant cryptozoological creatures once believed to live in water, whether sea monsters such as the Leviathan or lake monsters such as the Loch Ness Monster. If they were referred to as "sea snakes", they were understood to be the actual snakes that live in Indo-Pacific waters (Family Hydrophiidae).
Cosmic Serpents
The serpent, when forming a ring with its tail in its mouth, is a clear and widespread symbol of the "All-in-All", the totality of existence, infinity and the cyclic nature of the cosmos. The most well known version of this is the Aegypto-Greek Ourobouros. It is believed to have been inspired by the Milky Way as some ancient texts refer to a serpent of light residing in the heavens.
In Hindu mythology Vishnu is said to sleep while floating on the cosmic waters on the serpent Shesha. In the Puranas Shesha holds all the planets of the universe on his hoods and to constantly sing the glories of Vishnu from all his mouths. He is sometimes referred to as "Ananta-Shesha" which means "Endless Shesha." In the Samudra manthan chapter of the Puranas Shesha loosens Mount Mandara for it to be used as a churning rod by the Asuras and Devas to churn the ocean of milk in the heavens in order to make Soma (or Amrita), the divine elixir of immortality. As a churning rope another giant serpent called Vasuki is used.
In pre-Columbian Central America Quetzalcoatl was sometimes depicted as biting its own tail. The mother of Quetzalcoatl was the Aztec goddess Coatlicue ("the one with the skirt of serpents"), also known as Cihuacoatl ("The Lady of the serpent"). Quetzalcoatl's father was Mixcoatl ("Cloud Serpent"). He was identified with the Milky Way, the stars and the heavens in several Mesoamerican cultures.
The demi-god Aidophedo of the West African Ashanti is also a serpent biting its own tail. In Dahomey mythology of Benin in West Africa, the serpent that supports everything on its many coils was named Dan. In the Vodun of Benin and Haiti Ayida-Weddo (a.k.a. Aida-Wedo, Aido Quedo, "Rainbow-Serpent") is a spirit of fertility, rainbows and snakes, and a companion or wife to Dan, the father of all spirits. As Vodun was exported to Haiti through the slave trade Dan became Danballah, Damballah or Damballah-Wedo. Because of his association with snakes, he is sometimes disguised as Moses, who carried a snake on his staff. He is also thought by many to be the same entity of Saint Patrick, known as a snake banisher.
The serpent Hydra is a star constellation representing either the serpent thrown angrily into the sky by Apollo or the Lernaean Hydra as defeated by Heracles for one of his Twelve Labours. The constellation Serpens represents a snake being tamed by Ophiuchus the snake-handler, another constellation. The most probable interpretation is that Ophiuchus represents the healer Asclepius.
Chthonic serpents and sacred trees
In many myths the chthonic serpent (sometimes a pair) lives in or is coiled around a Tree of Life situated in a divine garden. In the Genesis story of the Torah and Biblical Old Testament the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is situated in the Garden of Eden together with the tree of immortality. In Greek mythology Ladon coiled around the tree in the garden of the Hesperides protecting the entheogenic golden apples.

Under yet another Tree (the Bodhi tree of Enlightenment), the Buddha sat in ecstatic meditation. When a storm arose, the mighty serpent king Mucalinda rose up from his place beneath the earth and enveloped the Buddha in seven coils for seven days, not to break his ecstatic state.
The Vision Serpent was also a symbol of rebirth in Mayan mythology, fuelling some cross-Atlantic cultural contexts favored in pseudoarchaeology. The Vision Serpent goes back to earlier Maya conceptions, and lies at the center of the world as the Mayans conceived it. "It is in the center axis atop the World Tree. Essentially the World Tree and the Vision Serpent, representing the king, created the center axis which communicates between the spiritual and the earthly worlds or planes. It is through ritual that the king could bring the center axis into existence in the temples and create a doorway to the spiritual world, and with it power". (Schele and Friedel, 1990: 68)
Sometimes the Tree of Life is represented (in a combination with similar concepts such as the World Tree and Axis mundi or "World Axis") by a staff such as those used by shamans. Examples of such staffs featuring coiled snakes in mythology are the caduceus of Hermes, the Rod of Asclepius and the staff of Moses. The oldest known representation is that of the Sumerian fertility god Ningizzida. Ningizzida was sometimes depicted as a serpent with a human head, eventually becoming a god of healing and magic. It is the companion of Dumuzi (Tammuz) with whom it stood at the gate of heaven. In the Louvre, there is a famous green steatite vase carved for king Gudea of Lagash (dated variously 2200–2025 BCE) with an inscription dedicated to Ningizzida. Ningizzida was the ancestor of Gilgamesh, who according to the epic dived to the bottom of the waters to retrieve the plant of life. But while he rested from his labor, a serpent came and ate the plant. The snake became immortal, and Gilgamesh was destined to die.
Ningizzida has been popularised in the 20th C. by Raku Kei Reiki (a.k.a. "The Way of the Fire Dragon") where "Nin Giz Zida" is believed to be a fire serpent of Tibetan rather than Sumerian origin. Nin Giz Zida is another name for the ancient Hindu concept of Kundalini, a Sanskrit word meaning either "coiled up" or "coiling like a snake". Kundalini refers to the mothering intelligence behind yogic awakening and spiritual maturation leading to altered states of consciousness. There are a number of other translations of the term usually emphasizing a more serpentine nature to the word— e.g. 'serpent power'. It has been suggested by Joseph Campbell that the symbol of snakes coiled around a staff is an ancient representation of Kundalini physiology. The staff represents the spinal column with the snake(s) being energy channels. In the case of two coiled snakes they usually cross each other seven times, a possible reference to the seven energy centers called chakras.
In Egypt, Ra and Atum ("he who completes or perfects") were the same god, Atum, the "counter-Ra," was associated with earth animals, including the serpent: Nehebkau ("he who harnesses the souls") was the two headed serpent god who guarded the entrance to the underworld. He is often seen as the son of the snake goddess Renenutet, often confused with the snake goddess Wadjet.
The image of the serpent as the embodiment of the wisdom transmitted by Sophia was an emblem used by gnosticism, especially those sects that the more orthodox characterized as "Ophites" ("Serpent People"). The chthonic serpent was one of the earth-animals associated with the cult of Mithras. The Basilisk, the venomous "king of serpents" with the glance that kills, was hatched by a serpent, Pliny the Elder and others thought, from the egg of a cock.
Outside Eurasia, in Yoruba mythology, Oshunmare was another mythic regenerating serpent.
The Rainbow Serpent (also known as the Rainbow Snake) is a major mythological being for Aboriginal people across Australia, although the creation stories associated with it are best known from northern Australia. In Fiji Ratumaibulu was a serpent god who ruled the underworld and made fruit trees bloom.

Cambodian Mythology

Serpents, or nagas, play a particularly important role in Cambodian mythology. A well-known story explains the emergence of the Khmer people from the union of Indian and indigenous elements, the latter being represented as nagas. According to the story, an Indian brahmana named Kaundinya came to Cambodia, which at the time was under the dominion of the naga king. The naga princess Soma sallied forth to fight against the invader but was defeated. Presented with the option of marrying the victorious Kaundinya, Soma readily agreed to do so, and together they ruled the land. The Khmer people are their descendants.[4]
Greek Mythology

Serpents figured prominently in archaic Greek myths. According to some sources, Ophion ("serpent", a.k.a. Ophioneus), ruled the world with Eurynome before the two of them were cast down by Cronus and Rhea.
The Minoan Snake Goddess brandished a serpent in either hand, perhaps evoking her role as source of wisdom, rather than her role as Mistress of the Animals (Potnia theron), with a leopard under each arm. She is a Minoan version of the Canaanite fertility goddess Asherah. It is not by accident that later the infant Heracles, a liminal hero on the threshold between the old ways and the new Olympian world, also brandished the two serpents that "threatened" him in his cradle. Classical Greeks did not perceive that the threat was merely the threat of wisdom. But the gesture is the same as that of the Cretan goddess.
Typhon the enemy of the Olympian gods is described as a vast grisly monster with a hundred heads and a hundred serpents issuing from his thighs, who was conquered and cast into Tartarus by Zeus, or confined beneath volcanic regions, where he is the cause of eruptions. Typhon is thus the chthonic figuration of volcanic forces. Amongst his children by Echidna are Cerberus (a monstrous three-headed dog with a snake for a tail and a serpentine mane), the serpent tailed Chimaera, the serpent-like chthonic water beast Lernaean Hydra and the hundred-headed serpentine dragon Ladon. Both the Lernaean Hydra and Ladon were slain by Heracles.
Python was the earth-dragon of Delphi, always represented in the vase-paintings and by sculptors as a serpent. Pytho was the chthonic enemy of Apollo, who slew her and remade her former home his own oracle, the most famous in Classical Greece.

Amphisbaena a Greek word, from amphis, meaning "both ways", and bainein, meaning "to go", also called the "Mother of Ants", is a mythological, ant-eating serpent with a head at each end. According to Greek mythology, the mythological amphisbaena was spawned from the blood that dripped from Medusa the Gorgon's head as Perseus flew over the Libyan Desert with it in his hand. Medusa and the other Gorgons were vicious female monsters with sharp fangs and hair of living, venomous snakes. The Gorgons wore a belt of two intertwined serpents in the same configuration of the caduceus.
Asclepius, the son of Apollo and Koronis, learned the secrets of keeping death at bay after observing one serpent bringing another (which Asclepius himself had fatally wounded) healing herbs. To prevent the entire human race from becoming immortal under Asclepius's care, Zeus killed him with a bolt of lightning. Asclepius' death at the hands of Zeus illustrates man's inability to challenge the natural order that separates mortal men from the gods. In honor of Asclepius, snakes were often used in healing rituals. Non-poisonous snakes were left to crawl on the floor in dormitories where the sick and injured slept. In The Library, Apollodorus claimed that Athena gave Asclepius a vial of blood from the Gorgons. Gorgon blood had magical properties: if taken from the left side of the Gorgon, it was a fatal poison; from the right side, the blood was capable of bringing the dead back to life. However Euripides wrote in his tragedy Ion that the Athenian queen Creusa had inherited this vial from her ancestor Erichthonios, who was a snake himself and receiving the vial from Athena. In this version the blood of Medusa had the healing power while the lethal poison originated from Medusa's serpents.
Laocoön was allegedly a priest of Poseidon (or of Apollo, by some accounts) at Troy; he was famous for warning the Trojans in vain against accepting the Trojan Horse from the Greeks, and for his subsequent divine execution. Poseidon (some say Athena), who was supporting the Greeks, subsequently sent sea-serpents to strangle Laocoön and his two sons, Antiphantes and Thymbraeus. Another tradition states that Apollo sent the serpents for an unrelated offense, and only unlucky timing caused the Trojans to misinterpret them as punishment for striking the Horse.
Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great and a princess of the primitive land of Epirus, had the reputation of a snake-handler, and it was in serpent form that Zeus was said to have fathered Alexander upon her; tame snakes were still to be found at Macedonian Pella in the 2nd century AD (Lucian, Alexander the false prophet) and at Ostia a bas-relief shows paired coiled serpents flanking a dressed altar, symbols or embodiments of the Lares of the household, worthy of veneration (Veyne 1987 illus p 211).
Norse Mythology

Jörmungandr, alternately referred to as the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent, is a sea serpent of the Norse mythology, the middle child of Loki and the giantess Angrboða.
According to the Prose Edda, Odin took Loki's three children, Fenrisúlfr, Hel and Jörmungandr. He tossed Jörmungandr into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpent grew so big that he was able to surround the Earth and grasp his own tail, and as a result he earned the alternate name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. Jörmungandr's arch enemy is the god Thor.
Judaism and Christianity
In the Hebrew Bible (the Tanach) of Judaism, the speaking serpent (nachash) in the Garden of Eden brought forbidden knowledge, but was not identified with Satan in the Book of Genesis. "Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made," Genesis 3:1 reminded its readers. Nor is there any indication in Genesis that the Serpent was a deity in its own right, aside from the fact that the Pentateuch is not otherwise rife with talking animals. Although the identity of the Serpent as Satan is made explicit in the later writings of the Hebrew prophets and the New Testament of the Bible, in Genesis the Serpent is merely portrayed as a deceptive creature promoting as good what God had directly forbidden, and particularly cunning in manipulating truth toward its deceptive ends. (cf. Gen. 3:4-5 and 3:22)
Though it was cursed for its role in the Garden, this was not the end of the serpent, who continued to be venerated in the folk religion of Judah and was tolerated by official religion until the in time of king Hezekiah.
A conversion of a rod to a snake and back was believed to have been experienced by Moses and later by his brother Aaron according to Islamic, Christian, and Jewish hagiography:
And the Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. And the Lord said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand and caught it and it became a rod in his hand. (Exodus 4:2-4)
The Book of Numbers provides an origin for an archaic bronze serpent associated with Moses, with the following narratives:
"21.6. And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. 7. Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 8. And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived." (Book of Numbers 21:6-9)
When the young reforming king Hezekiah came to the throne of Judah in the late 8th century:
"He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan." 2 Kings 18:4.
In Christianity, a connection between the Serpent and Satan is strongly made, and Genesis 3:14 where God curses the serpent, is seen in that light: "And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life". Some feel that this seems to indicate that the serpent had legs prior to this punishment. But if the lying serpent was in fact Satan himself (as he is called THE serpent or dragon), rather than an ordinary snake simply possessed by Satan, then the reference to crawling and dust is purely symbolic reference to his ultimate humiliation and defeat.
In the Gospel of Matthew 3:7, John the Baptist calls the Pharisees and Saducees visiting him a `brood of vipers`. Later in Matthew 23:33, Jesus himself uses this imagery, observing: "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of Gehenna?" ("Hell" is the usual translation of Jesus' word Gehenna.)
Although in the minority, there are at least a couple of passages in the New Testament that do not present the snake with negative connotation. When sending out the twelve apostles, Jesus exhorted them "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves" (Matthew 10:16).
Jesus made a comparison between himself and the setting up of the snake on the hill in the desert by Moses:
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:14-15).
In this comparison Jesus was not so much connecting himself to the serpent[citation needed], but showing the analogy of his being a divinely provided object of faith, through which God would provide salvation, just as God provided healing to those who looked in faith to the brass serpent. The other most significant reference to the serpent in the New Testament occurs in Revelation 12:9, where the identity of the serpent in Genesis is made explicit:
"The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray..."
This verse lends support to the view that of the serpent being Satan himself, which helps to explain, as well, why Eve was not surprised to be spoken to by the serpent--it was not a talking snake, but a beautiful and intelligent (yet evil) angelic being.

Snake handling is a religious ritual in a small number of Christian churches in the U.S., usually characterized as rural and Pentecostal. Practitioners believe it dates to antiquity and quote the Bible to support the practice, especially:

Snakes entwined the staffs both of Hermes (the caduceus) and of Asclepius, where a single snake entwined the rough staff. On Hermes' caduceus, the snakes were not merely duplicated for symmetry, they were paired opposites. (This motif is congruent with the phurba.) The wings at the head of the staff identified it as belonging to the winged messenger, Hermes, the Roman Mercury, who was the god of magic, diplomacy and rhetoric, of inventions and discoveries, the protector both of merchants and that allied occupation, to the mythographers' view, of thieves. This 13 month calendar was used by the Druids to calculate their year and important festivals.

A Search for the White Goddess
The White Goddess is one of the names given to the Earth Mother; the Moon goddess, to Venus, Astarte, Lilith, Belili, the Muses, the Three Graces and to innumerable other female deities. She is found in the myths and legends of all cultures. The stories and attributes of the white goddess are remarkably similar in nations as far apart as Ireland and China, and this points to a very ancient common source for the myths, which appear to have come out of Africa with Homo sapiens 100,000 years ago.

Since Ptolemy based his astronomy on other older civilization, I forgot about this constellation all together. The constellation also doesn't have a regular zodiac host so I completely forgot about the significance when they dropped the zodiac constellation. The four houses of constellations of three are equal as the twelve of the zodiac we know. I wonder who's been pondering on the ramifications of 13 months of the zodiac, i am all i am?

There was always some amiss with astrology for me.
It didn't 'grab me' with the sun sign thing that is popular in papers and magazines...then I found out about the moon sign and ascending sign, still it seemed something was amiss...then I was told years ago about there being a 13th star sign and didn't look into to it until a couple of weeks ago...now, understanding a bit about symbolism, it hit me like a tonne of bricks and made sense with all of the mythologies of older cultures that I have read about and the precession of the equinox.
Anyway, thanks for your interest, there's plenty more to come as well.

Yes the symbol of the snake in the sky symbolises the meeting point between the ecliptic and galaxy, the so-called stargate between Scorpio and Saggitarius, just where serpens is located. This has been occulted away as it is meant as a coded secret to be discovered.
The 12 signs of the inner zodiac are the correct number, the 13th one is a secret that lies behind and represents another level, that of the imprisonment on this planet.
The earth has been cordoned off from the living etheric forces of the other "spheres" and etheric beings that are the planets. This happened because the whole solar system was disturbed. The earth became the silent planet locked out and separated; the key to this lock is the moon; and the moon holds the energy that makes this lock real. It is symbolised by the serpent, the ourobouros, that encircles the Earth (look at the NATO symbol).
The stargate is the point identified by the Egyptians and others (in the place of the 13th sign) as the escape route / or entry point from this.

Seriously, this is great, and not many people are very familiar with the "13th" constellation. I only discovered it a few years ago myself and I've been involved with astrology for 35+ years now. It sounds like humanity is returning to a point where they need to deal with, reintegrate, this ancient awareness etc.
For awhile now I've been sensing deeper meanings behind the "12" and then the "13th" of a lot of different things. Again I sense that humanity has reached the point where we're spiritually evolving beyond the long-standing "12" consciousness, back into a "13" type of beingness, consciousness. I think us having to consider this 13th constellation, the Serpent Holder, is a huge aspect of this process of our expanding awareness right now.
To me the whole Mayan calendar system is much like this too. We think we know what it is, what it means, but we're learning that it's much much larger than what our awareness could comprehend earlier. There's nothing wrong with astrology, a 13th constellation, the Mayan calendar, 2012, etc......only our limited awareness of these ancinet multidimensional systems IMO.

Numbers have been very helpful for me understanding the things that I intuite and sense physically and their relationship. 1 in 3, 3 in 1. One individuated aspect of ALL THAT IS within three parts, mind, soul, body; future, present, past; thought, word, action; there, in between, here. Three parts in one experience. There is a lot within the relationship of the numbers that are co-joined, that is, those beyond the 01/1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10 initial cycle, or circle, of numbers, represented through the body as one thumb (01), the fingers (2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9), to the other thumb (10). The first and the last, the begining and the end, the alpha and the omega. This is definitely a 'time' of awakening to our true potential and an exciting period of 'history' to be incarnated within, I am loving the experience.
Although I have put the hours (days) in on this thread, it has been fun and it is something that I had heard about years ago and didn't get around to looking into. I've also got a lot more pictures and info to add, so I appreciate everyone that is willing to read the thread and look into the links available as well. I am going to get into some interdimensional aspects with this after I have added some more, and would love for you to add to the discussion with the knowledge that you have, as with everyone else as well. Hopefully we can all share our understandings and bring them together to create a more complete picture of our experience, where we are headed, how we got here, etc, etc.

Let us make a model to see if we can locate and understand the two missing cherubim. Picture a right angle cross with four arms of equal length. Next, place the Autumnal Equinox and Leo the Lion at the end of the top arm. Position the Spring Equinox and Aquarius the Man on the bottom arm of the cross on the same line as Leo the Lion.
Now take the Sphinx, that runs around binding things together, and skewer it on the vertical beam of the cross between Aquarius and Leo. Calm Down! We’re using imaginary lines, so it doesn’t hurt. Now that we all have the Great Sphinx of Giza on the vertical beam of the cross binding the Man and the Lion, we are getting our first glimpse of the male aspect of this hermaphroditic Sphinx.
In due time, we will meet the Sphinx and a few of its mythological friends on our journey to the twilight zone. They will unite to reveal their hidden-timely symbol, but, as you can plainly see, I don’t mind lifting a few veils to expose some clues along the way.
Let us remove the Great Sphinx from our imaginary cross and return it to the Zodiac to bind Virgo, the Virgin, and Leo, the Lion. Now the Sphinx has its feminine face or aspect again.
Place the Summer Solstice of June 21 on the right arm of the cross. It is just Dawning into Taurus, the Bull, at this time in the Platonic year. Now, put the Bull over the Summer Solstice. The Summer Solstice will take the next 2,150 years to travel westward through the constellation of Taurus.
Let’s place the Winter Solstice on the left arm of the cross, and then we can go find that Eagle who cohabits with a Scorpion. Yes, they dwell in the constellation of Scorpio, which Abraham of Biblical fame always called the Eagle. Put that Eagle on the left end of the cross.
If we check the heavens on December 21, we will find the Winter-Solstice sun is just dawning into Scorpio, and it will be traversing that constellation for the next 2,150 years.
We are now observing how the four cherubim look when the cross lines up with them at this time in the Platonic year. Let us take the four genii off the cross and put them into the wheel of the Zodiac where they belong. We will leave the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes, along with the Summer and Winter Solstices, attached to the ends of the cross.
Now put the cross in the middle of the Zodiac and spin it. Don’t hold your breath! The cross is going to take 25,800 years to make one revolution. Notice! We have the ancient and universal symbol for the planet Earth — a cross in a circle.
Let me show you a trick. Turn the cross to put the Vernal Equinox in Aries where it was 2,000 to 4,000 years ago. Now check the right arm of the cross where the Summer Solstice is attached. If all is going well, it should be in the constellation of Cancer.

I'm afraid I don't think i could agree that awareness of the serpentine identity of the 13th constellation is going to take us forward a great deal, as it has probably always been known to occult masters, and deliberately occulted away. It might help us to uncover the reasons and plans behind such occult wisdom; and, as it represents the stargate and thus the key to our imprisonment by the lunar forces, it could help us understand the nature of that lock. That it is to say, that the "reality" of our present circumstances was put in place for a reason to hold in some deadly force, that of the unfolding power of serpent-consciousness and its agenda for earth.
As that agenda does not appear to have human wellbeing at its heart, I'd be loath to say that being a part of that consciousness is in any way good.
We just need to know why it is there and how it works.

I'm afraid I don't think i could agree that awareness of the serpentine identity of the 13th constellation is going to take us forward a great deal, as it has probably always been known to occult masters, and deliberately occulted away. It might help us to uncover the reasons and plans behind such occult wisdom; and, as it represents the stargate and thus the key to our imprisonment by the lunar forces, it could help us understand the nature of that lock. That it is to say, that the "reality" of our present circumstances was put in place for a reason to hold in some deadly force, that of the unfolding power of serpent-consciousness and its agenda for earth.
As that agenda does not appear to have human wellbeing at its heart, I'd be loath to say that being a part of that consciousness is in any way good.
We just need to know why it is there and how it works.
I disagree that the serpent symbol represents a star gate. I think it more likely that the serpent represents the vril force manifested thriough the male genitalia.
When Moses doubted he was really hearing the voice of God, he was asked what he was holding in his hand. When he replied that he was holding a rod, he is commanded to throw it to the ground. When he does, the rod becomes a serpent. When he picks it up it becomes a rod again. Later, under the direction of Moses, when Aaron throws his rod down before Pharaoh, it becomes a snake as well.(Exodus 7:1-16).....
This shows that when the men 'throw down their rods' they are really diverting the male sexual energy from the chakras or glands, and channeling it up, indeed as they say, through the crown chakra or pineal gland...
The kindalini vril force, when mastered, or rather when it masters you, leaves the male completely sexually impotent... the energy 'plug' which draws energy for sex being eliminated, the process of using that energy for mental awareness increases dramatically....

Yes I definitely see your point about kundalini. Certainly there's a clear possible link to the serpens constellation and to the control of (or by) the vril energy. But I see that being linked to a stargate, through the galactic centre, not as a separate 13th zodiac symbol, more of an occult transcendence of the 12 different signs, using the energy, not being used by it. We still have to understand the difference between the two.:)

I’ve been researching some of the symbols that appear in this thread. I think that serpents and reptiles have been covered by many, and for some reason I just decided to take a closer look at the EAGLE.
The Eagle permeates so much of our daily lives through symbolism, and I could fill 10 pages with examples, but I think that most people would immediately agree on this, and so I’ll skip right over pointing out the obvious.
Instead I’d like to focus more on who this Eagle is, and what he means.
I’d like to start by looking at the animal. There was a time where, in England, "EAGLE" referred specifically to the Golden Eagle. So, although the Eagle that floods the symbolism in America is supposedly the Bald Eagle, I feel as though the very source of Eagle symbolism comes from the Golden Eagle, starting with Aetos Dios – which I will come to later a little further down.
The Eagle is mainly an Old World animal, and only two species appear in North America; the Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagle. The scientific name for the Golden Eagle is Aquila Chrysaetos. (Christ?)
Symbolism is mostly shown through artistic visuals, and for that reason I want to demonstrate how similar, in shape, these two BIRDS OF PREY are;

I know that we are told that it’s the BALD EAGLE in American symbolism, but based on all the other lies that we’ve been told, and all the secrets that are kept from us, I’m not inclined to take their word for it. I’d like to explore the possibility that Eagle symbolism is based on the GOLDEN EAGLE.
Let’s start with the gods, shall we? Zeus had an immortal Golden Eagle as a companion. There are a few different versions of the story, but they all agree that the Eagle did exist (and still does). The story goes that there once was a very popular mortal king by the name of Periphas (King of Attica) that was transformed into a Golden Eagle by Zeus. Depending on whose version you believe, the motive ranges from jealousy (of Periphas by Zeus), to a reward.
I don’t see how changing a righteous and popular king into an Eagle, subservient to Zeus, can be considered a reward. So, I’m intuitively going to go with the version that Zeus was jealous of Perhiphos, and changed him into an Eagle known as Aetos Dios. I do believe that Zeus became fond of this bird and later gave him certain honors, which include giving him a place amongst the stars in the constellation Aquilla.
Another dubious honor bestowed upon Aestos Dios, by Zeus, was to guard the Sacred Sceptre.

Interestingly, both the pope and royals use REGNAL NAMES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnal_name) when ascending their thrones. This tactic has been used by the gods throughout the ages.
Virgin Mary is the same as Sumerian Inanna, Babylonian Ishtar, Roman Venus, Greek Aphrodite, Diana, and so on... The same immortal being shifting shapes from one body to the next.

Thanks for the information and the research that you have done.
There is definitely a connection between the eagle and the serpent throughout.
The Eagle Nebula is within the Serpens constellation.
The staff symbolism can also be seen with the winged staff, or caduceus, that also has snakes intertwined around it.
Now, the staff symbolism can be seen from two sources with the greeks. One is Asclepius and the other Hermes.
Here is some information that I found while doing some research on all of this...
The Greeks identified him as Asclepius, the god of medicine. Asclepius was the son of Apollo and Coronis (although some say that his mother was Arsinoë). The story goes that Coronis two-timed Apollo by sleeping with a mortal, Ischys, while she was pregnant by Apollo. A crow brought Apollo the unwelcome news, but instead of the expected reward the crow, which until then had been snow-white, was cursed by Apollo and turned black.
In a rage of jealousy, Apollo shot Coronis with an arrow. Rather than see his child perish with her, Apollo snatched the unborn baby from its mother’s womb as the flames of the funeral pyre engulfed her, and took the infant to Chiron, the wise centaur (represented in the sky by the constellation Centaurus).
Chiron raised Asclepius as his own son, teaching him the arts of healing and hunting. Asclepius became so skilled in medicine that not only could he save lives, he could also raise the dead. On one occasion in Crete, Glaucus, the young son of King Minos, fell into jar of honey and drowned while at play. As Asclepius contemplated the body of Glaucus, a snake slithered towards it. He killed the snake with his staff; then another snake came along with a herb in its mouth and placed it on the body of the dead snake, which magically returned to life. Asclepius took the same herb and laid it on the body of Glaucus, who too was magically resurrected. (Robert Graves suggests that the herb was mistletoe, which the ancients thought had great regenerative properties, but perhaps it was actually willow bark, the source of salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin.) Because of this incident, says Hyginus, Ophiuchus is shown in the sky holding a snake, which became the symbol of healing from the fact that snakes shed their skin every year and are thus seemingly reborn.
Side Note: In Greek mythology, Minos (in Greek Μίνως, genitive Μίνωος) was a mythical king of the island of Crete, son of Zeus and Europa. After his death, Minos became a judge of the dead in Hades. The Minoan civilization has been named after him. By his wife, Pasiphaë, he fathered Ariadne, Androgeus, Deucalion, Phaedra, Glaucus, Catreus, Acacallis, and many others.
Others, though, say that Asclepius received from the goddess Athene the blood of Medusa the Gorgon. The blood that flowed from the veins on her left side was a poison, but the blood from the right side could raise the dead.
Someone else supposedly resurrected by Asclepius was Hippolytus, son of Theseus, who died when he was thrown from his chariot (some identify him with the constellation Auriga, the Charioteer). Reaching for his healing herbs, Asclepius touched the youth’s chest three times, uttering healing words, and Hippolytus raised his head.
Hades, god of the Underworld, began to realize that the flow of dead souls into his domain would soon dry up if this technique became widely known. He complained to his brother god Zeus who struck down Asclepius with a thunderbolt. Apollo was outraged at this harsh treatment of his son and retaliated by killing the three Cyclopes who forged Zeus’ thunderbolts. To mollify Apollo, Zeus made Asclepius immortal (in the circumstances he could hardly bring him back to life again) and set him among the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus.
The brightest star in Ophiuchus is second-magnitude Alpha Ophiuchi, called Rasalhague from the Arabic meaning ‘the head of the serpent collector’. Beta Ophiuchi is called Cebalrai from the Arabic for ‘the shepherd’s dog’; the Arabs visualized a shepherd (the star Alpha Ophiuchi) along with his dog and some sheep in this area.
Delta and Epsilon Ophiuchi are called Yed Prior and Yed Posterior. These are compound names, formed from the Arabic al-yad, meaning ‘hand’, with the Latin words Prior and Posterior added to give names meaning the ‘leading’ and ‘following’ part of the hand.

Apollo and the birth of Hermes
Hermes was born on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. The story is told in the Homeric Hymn to Hermes. His mother, Maia, had been secretly impregnated by Zeus. Maia wrapped the infant in blankets but Hermes escaped while she was asleep. Hermes ran to Thessaly, where Apollo was grazing his cattle. The infant Hermes stole a number of his cows and took them to a cave in the woods near Pylos, covering their tracks. In the cave, he found a tortoise and killed it, then removed the insides. He used one of the cow's intestines and the tortoise shell and made the first lyre. Apollo complained to Maia that her son had stolen his cattle, but Hermes had already replaced himself in the blankets she had wrapped him in, so Maia refused to believe Apollo's claim. Zeus intervened and, claiming to have seen the events, sided with Apollo. Hermes then began to play music on the lyre he had invented. Apollo, a god of music, fell in love with the instrument and offered to allow exchange of the cattle for the lyre. Hence, Apollo became a master of the lyre and Hermes invented a kind of pipes-instrument called a syrinx.
Later, Apollo exchanged a caduceus for a syrinx from Hermes.

So, Asclepius/Hermes/Thoth, are the same representation of Ophiuchus, and Ophiuchus is positioned in the Serpens constellation, which consists of Caput Draconis and Cauda Draconis, who are possibly the two combatants in "The War of the Gods".

I find the crystal links stuff useful. Trying to make a synthesis of all the ancient myth surrounding the Serpent, eagle, no to mention other figures, associated with the zodiac and with the Gods of ancient Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Scandinavia, and what about India and China and America, is not an easy task!
I think Hamlet's Mill offers a useful introduction to a possible synthesis. And I like Velikovski's work. I'm getting into Philip gardiner's books, and it's worth mentioning Knight and Lomas who write about masonic origins; and Andrew Collins, who writes about the "Angels" and shamans at the origins of civilisation in the Middle East.

For some years we have been observing the 13th moon as a window of time to reverse our karma. The Hindu tradition has it that Lord Siva wanted to give a break to the humans as well as Gods from karmic suffering. He selected the 13th moon sunset time (1 ½ hour prior to sunset to do the job. The story says during this time Siva drank poison and as a result his throat became blue. The mythology is so profound. Our throat is the doorway that separates spirit and matter. Our life energy is in the throat. Our karma both individual and collective is in the throat. The expression Adam’s apple has a reference to the secret of the throat. Chanting of a mantra like ‘Tiraneelakantam’ during the 13th moon is beneficial to remove your karma.
Now let us see what the Pleidians have to say about number 13. The Pleidians talk about the 13 month lunar calendar is more powerful. “Contemplating the number 13 as a hidden mystery will bring an understanding of what influences you. Although 13 has been considered a number of ill luck and evil, if you search you will find that it holds a very powerful key for decoding the consciousness of humankind” (p 188 Family of Light, Barbara Marciniak).
Repeating the mantra 'Tiru Neela Kantam' on the 13th moon will open up a new life for you. Also pay attention to the number 13 as well and what it does for you in your day to day life. Thirteen means a new beginning. Most people return to work at the 13th hour after lunch break. Hence between 1:00PM and 2:00PM is renewal of life. Similarly the day changes at 1:00AM which is the 13th hour. “The ruling families on your planet know the significance of the number thirteen and steer you away from its use. Convincing you that it is the number of ill luck or evil. However it is a key to the doorway of the mystery of power” (pg 191 One Family of Light).
Why don't you meditate during 1:00AM and the 13th hour, on the 13th day of the month or on a pradosham day? On a daily basis say number 13 thirteen times.

They can be extremely critical of others, looking down at their seeming low class. As the myth implies, they can be over sexed, and use sex to get what they want. They can be very artistic and have an appreciation for beauty and the fine arts. This is a growth-oriented nakshatra, ruling crops and fertility. This implies they can rise to the top and achieve their desires. Also there is fertility for procreation, meaning they have children. This nakshatra gives wealth, but they must harness their worldly materialistic desires.

History of the star: A pale sapphire star in the Lyre Lyra. Vega from Arabic Al-Waqi' (1), "The stooping" eagle or "The swooping Vulture", and is often referred to as "The Vulture Star", "The Sitting Vulture", "The Falling Grype" and figured with upturned head with a lyre in its beak from the story of Orpheus [who might be described as the prototype of our modern pop-star] who was torn apart by the Maenads, raving mad-women [or fans], they cast the lyre in the river. Jupiter sent a vulture to scoop it out of the river and then placed it in the sky.
Alpha is Wega, less correctly Vega. Waghi, Vuega vel Vagieh, Veka are variations.
Greek titles for it became Allore, Alahore, and Alohore - (?).
Among Latin writers it was Lyra as often the alpha star or lucida takes on the name of the constellation. Flamsteed's had Testa fulgida dicta Lyra; Latin Fidis and Fides "lyre", "string" and Fidicula.
Sayce identifies Wega, in Babylonian astronomy, with Dilgan, "the Messenger of Light", a name also applied to other stars; and Brown writes of it: "At one time Vega was the Pole-star called in Akkadian Tir-anna (" Life of Heaven "), and in Assyrian Dayan-same ("Judge of Heaven"), as having the highest seat therein; but fourteen millenniums have passed since Wega occupied that position!" Due to the precession of the equinoxes, Polaris is now our Pole Star; "the still point in the turning world".
The Chinese called Vega She-niu, "the weaver", and her beloved shepherd, Altair, who meet once a year, crossing the Milky Way. Christians saw Lyra as King David's harp. In Holland's translation of Pliny it is the Harp-star.
It was one of the stars in the Hindu 20th nakshatra, Abhtlit, "Victorious", the most northern of these stellar divisions and far out of the moon's path , but apparently utilized to bring in this splendid object; or, as Mueller says, because it was of specially good omen, for under its influence the gods had vanquished the Asuras; these last being the Hindu divinities of evil, similar to the Titans of Greece. It was the doubtful one of that country's lunar stations, included in some, but omitted in others of their lists in all ages of their astronomy, and entirely different from the corresponding Arabic manzil and Chinese sieu, which lay in Capricorn. The Hindus figured it as a Triangle, or as the three-cornered nut of the aquatic plant Cringata.

History of the star: A star in the tip of the tail of the Little Bear Ursa Minor. Its name comes to us from the Latin, Stella Polaris, meaning "Pole Star".
It was known as the Star of Arcady, a title referring to Arcas, son of Callisto, transferred to the skies, now Ursa Minor, by his father Jove, when ignorantly about to slay his mother (Ursa Major).
Polaris has long been an important star to sailors, caravans of old winding their way over the desert by night and others who navigated their way by the stars. Located almost directly overhead as seen from the North Pole, it is situated at the tip of the tail of the Little Bear, Ursa Minor and the Lucida of that constellation. Perhaps more than any star other than the Sun; Polaris has been regarded as the most important star in the heavens. It has been known by many names in the past; "the Pathway"; "the Pointer" - indicating the way; "Navel of the World", "Gate of Heaven", "Hub of the Cosmos", "the Highest Peak of the World Mountain", "Lodestar"; "the Steering Star"; "the Ship Star"; and Stella Maris "Star of the Sea".
Greek navigators of old called Polaris; Kynosoura, which means "the Dog's Tail". The name came into our English language as Cynosure, which means "an object that serves as a focal point of attention and admiration" or "Something that serves to guide".
The Arabs of old regarded Polaris as a hole in the sky in which the Earth's axis found its bearing. The Norsemen saw Polaris as holding the Universe together, Moguls calling it "the Golden Peg". In Damascus it is called Mismar, a "Needle" or "Nail" and Al Kutb al Shamaliyy, "the Northern Axle", or "Spindle", the Pin fixed in the under stone of a mill around which the upper stone turns.
Indians called it Grahadhara "the Pivot of the Planets" representing the great god Dhruva.
The Turks know it as Yilduz, the Star par excellence; and have a story that its light was concealed for a time after their capture of Constantinople.
The proximity of the stars of the two bears (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor) to the North Celestial Pole gave the impression that they were wheeling around this point, pulling perhaps a plough behind them, tilling the heavenly fields and driven on by Bootes the Bear Driver who chases or herds the Bears around Polaris. Another version of this story has it that the oxen were tied to the polar axis and were driven on by Bootes, assisted by his two dogs Canes Venatici, in order that the rotations of the heavens should never cease.
In spite of Polaris's usefulness in navigation, the Arabs looked on the star as an evil star, calling it Al Kiblah, because it was the star "least distant from the pole". To them it was also Giedi or Al Jadi, Al Jadi, or Juddah, "the Young He Goat", "the slayer of the man" who had slain the Great Warrior of the Sky; who forever lies in the huge coffin outlined by the stars marking the big dipper (Ursa Major), all the other stars mourn for their lost hero and each night march around the sky in a never-ending funeral procession. The villain, Polaris, alone is kept motionless, an outcast forever fixed to the coldest part of the northern sky. Muslims used this star to orient themselves toward Mecca, the place Muslims must face during worship.
To our eyes Polaris appears to be motionless at the center of the field of circumpolar stars, a "still point in the turning world". All the other stars appear to circle around Polaris. But as early as 320 BCE the Greeks has realized that Polaris did not mark the pole exactly. Until then many people had believed that the heavenly Pole was absolutely and eternally fixed. Polaris has long been moving nearer the North Celestial Pole as it is still doing now. It will be closest to that position around 2100 AD. Because the earth wobbles on its axis like a slowly spinning top, the Pole Star once was Thuban, the third star from the end of the tail of Draco. And in a little more that 5000 years from now, Alderamin, the brightest star in the constellation Cepheus, the King, will be the Pole Star. (Allen).
In past ages, whichever star held the position of Pole Star was worshipped as the star of that age. Polaris is now the star of our own age. The planet, Uranus, was discovered a degree (longitude) away from this star.

Influence of the constellation: By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Tau and the 21st Tarot Trump "The Universe", "The World". (Robson).
General influence of the star: The Arabs were of the opinion that the contemplation of Polaris cured ophthalmia. (Robson).
The Chinese considered the Pole Star as the 'Great Honorable Lord of the Heavens'. Other races too had high admiration for it and one can draw the conclusion that, in a relevant position in the natal chart, it will give spiritual powers to the bearer and he will be highly respected. The Pole Star serves as a guide and indicator. If it is conjunct with planets in the angles, the native will have a good sense of discretion and is able to follow 'his intellect'. He clearly recognizes his aims and will pursue and achieve them. (Ebertin).
Ptolemy gives it a Saturn-Venus rating entirely right for the star which serves so well to guide us in our wanderings and this is just what it tell us about people when we find it strong in their charts. Zeta Virginis is just north of Spica, about a third of the distance from Spica to Arcturus: binoculars.
Between zeta Virginis and gamma Virginis (Porrima) is a delightful binary, Struve 1719: two eighth-magnitude stars which, combined, shine with a visual magnitude of 7.0.
The fixed companion is 7.5" from the primary with a position angle of 1º (due north from the primary). The binary is situated almost exactly in the middle of a triangle formed by gamma, zeta, and delta Virginis: binoculars.

A few suggestions on using the fixed stars

Aspects: The fixed stars operate by position and are said to "cast no rays" or, in other words, their aspects are said to be ineffective and their influence to be exerted only by conjunction and parallel.
Some authorities suggest aspects to the fixed stars can be read, but it is only the opposition that is thought to be of any relevance. The opposition may exert some influence due to the polarity, but the conjunction is by far the primary aspect to consider. Trines, sextiles and squares should therefore be discounted.
The fixed stars are only to be read to the natal and not to progressed or arc charts.
Fixed stars are irrelevant to the study of midpoints.

It is one of the fastest eSTREAM candidates at around 2.6 cycles per byte on some platforms. It has a structure a little like RC4, but adds an array of 260 32-bit words which are indexed using a permutation of bytes, and produces 64 bits in each round.

The field of view spans over 3 degrees (six Full Moons) on the sky and includes emission nebula IC 1318 and open star cluster NGC 6910. Left of Gamma Cyg and shaped like two glowing cosmic wings divided by a long dark dust lane, IC 1318's popular name is understandably the Butterfly Nebula. Above and left of Gamma Cyg, are the young, still tightly grouped stars of NGC 6910. Gamma (Asellus Borealis), delta (Asellus Australis), eta, and theta were the Persian lunar station Avra-k, the Cloud, and the Coptic Ermelia, Nurturing.
In this constellation, with some slight variations as to boundaries at different times in Hindu astronomy, — gamma (Asellus Borealis) and delta (Asellus Australis) – the Aselli - always being included and occasionally eta, theta, and Praesaepe, — was located the 6th nakshatra Pushya, "Flower", or Tishiya, "Auspicious", with Brihaspati, the priest and teacher of the gods, as presiding divinity. It was sometimes figured as a "Crescent",
and again as the "head of an Arrow"; it was also called Sidhaya, "Prosperous".
The Arabic manzil Al Nathrah, the Gap in the hair under the muzzle of the supposed immense ancient Lion that the Arabs had here, was chiefly formed by Praesaepe; but later gamma (Asellus Borealis) and delta (Asellus Australis) – the Aselli - were sometimes included, when it was Al Himarain, the Two Asses, a title adopted from the Greeks. The Arabs also knew it as Al Fnm al Asad and as Al Anf al Asad, the Mouth, and the Muzzle, of the Lion, both referring to the early figure.

The Arabic name for Adhafera is Ad-Dafirah (1), "The curl". In Arabia, this star, Adhafera (zeta) with Regulus (Alpha) Algieba (gamma), and eta (Al Jabbah) were the Arabic 8th manzil, Al Jabhah, the "Forehead". (Allen).
Etymology: ADHAFERA. Curl of the Lion's mane. It has been called the Funeral Pyre. The “pyre” could be a significant echo of the FERA element, as HeBHeR is FIRE in Hebrew (see “FIRE”). Or, the fire can merely be connected to the Leo fire sign imagery, and the lion’s mane. The mane points to the hairy PeR(GH)A or FeRA root seen in “PILE.” Arabic FaRVaH is a better source for FUR than the given [I]Old French – PILLOW is related. More than a lock of this hair is probably an Ayin-Daled-Yod, (GH)aDeeY, meaning ornament. Along with any flashy fire, this theme is likely to be a showy symbol of the subject’s gorgeous locks of hair, or even if bald, his/her curling, flowing ego. History of the star: A star in the breast of The Swan Cygnus. Sadr, or As-Sadr (1), from Arabic Al Sadr al Dajajah, "the Hen's Breast".
Christians saw in Cygnus the Cross of Calvary, Christi Crux, or Crux cum S. Helena. This Cross is formed by alpha (Deneb Adige), gamma (this star Sador), eta, and beta (Albireo), marking the upright along the Galaxy, more than 20° in length, zeta, epsilon (Gienah), gamma this star, and delta being the transverse. Gamma marks the center of the Cross.
These last (zeta, epsilon (Gienah), gamma this star, and delta) also were an Arab asterism, Al Fawaris, "the Riders"; alpha and kappa sometimes being added to the group.

History of the star: A star in the right Eye of the Dragon, Draco. It was the pole star about 3500 BC. The Arabic name for Eltanin or Etamin is At-Tinnin (1), "The great serpent". Ras Eltanim, Eltanin, Ettanin, Etannin, Etanim, Etamin, etc., is from Al Ras al Tinnin, "the Dragon's Head", applied to this, as it also is to alpha (Thuban). The word Tinnin is nearly synonymous with Thu'ban.
This star was also called Rastaben, Rasaben, Rastaban "head of the snake".
It was one of Al'Awa'id, "the Mother Camels" which was known as the Quinque Dromedarii. In the Arabic theme for this constellation the stars beta (Alwaid), gamma (this star Etamin), nu (Kuma) and xi (Grumium) in the Head of the Dragon represent four mother camels protecting a baby camel from the attack of two hyenas (eta and zeta, Nodus 1). The nomads camp located nearby (the three unnamed stars in the neck of the Dragon: upsilon, tau, and sigma).
Apet, Bast, Mut, Sekhet, and Taurt were all titles of one goddess in the Nile worship, symbolized by this star, gamma Draconis, Etamin.
It is interesting to know that the Boeotian Thebes, the City of the Dragon, from the story of its founder, Cadmus, shared with its Egyptian namesake the worship of this star in a temple dedicated, so far as its orientation shows, about 1130 BCE, a cult doubtless drawn from the parent city (Thebes) in Egypt, and adopted in Greece, as also in Italy in the little temple to Isis in Pompeii. Here, however, the city authorities interfered with this star-worship in one of their numerous raids on the astrologers, and bricked up the opening whence the star was observed.

The spider is often seen as the 'symbol' for the weaver of the web of illusion. People seem to get so upset when they see a spider or a snake coupled with a human and start thinking about their deaths etc. For death is coming and just maybe a snake might bite us! Fear arrives. and scrambles our abitity to understand. Meditation is key. Ritual is key( yes ritual aint bad). These will help stop the chattering mind and direct the individual to seeing how things really are. I.e the immortal nature of the transcended self.
Where are you now? what is around you, how far does your consciousness spread inwardly and outwardly? This is all you. You are the spider at the centre of the web!

The solar year has a little more than 364 days. The lunar month has just over 29 days. To reconcile these awkward figures the ancient astronomers devised a calendar of thirteen equal months, each of 28 days or four equal weeks. This calendar is all but regular, with the full moon falling one day and one hour later each month, and with only a small correction to be made at the end of the year.
The lunar months (or 'moon ths'), were represented in the skies by the constellations of the zodiac; and on the ground by a circle of trees in the sacred grove. Twelve of the signs of the zodiac are familiar to us from the astrology columns in the daily newspapers, but what happened to the thirteenth, and what was its symbol? This question can be answered by consulting the works of the ancient astronomers. Ptolemy of Alexandria gives the name of the constellation, and also the bearing and magnitude of the stars which form it. The constellation was called Ophicius (in Greek) and Serpentarius (in Latin). Both names mean 'snake-holder', and refer to the pythoness, the high priestess of the goddess temples. The symbol of this sign, a bare-breasted woman holding snakes, occurred in the Sumerian; Minoan, and other cultures of the Archaic period. Thus the missing month, the month that we disrupted an orderly calendar to avoid, was the month of the Goddess
Less familiar is the forgotten thirteenth sign, which lies "betwixt" them, Ophicius, the Snake-Holder, the symbol of which was a goddess or priestess brandishing two snakes, and which connoted the most important new moon in the goddess' lunar calendar. Now, while it is true that the ORIGIN of the word is indeed obscured and clouded in secrecy, it is primarily because Obeah, as implied above, is in itself clouded in secrecy --- being the remnant of a once very powerful and celebrated SECRET religious Order lost in the mist of time. Throughout the ancient world, the Middle East and Egypt, because of the brilliantly clear desert night skys, the stars and the constellations carried deep significance, both for the wandering tribes such as those following Moses and the great civilizations and city-states such as Babylonia, Sumeria, and Egypt. Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer is one of those desert-sky constellations. Most people pretty much know what the Zodiac is --- the constellations on the plane of the ecliptic through which the sun passes in the course of a year --- and what their "Sun Sign" is in relation to the Zodiac (i.e., Sagittarius, Taurus, etc.). What most people don't know is that there are actually thirteen Sun Signs, NOT twelve. According to the official modern constellation boundaries that astronomers use today, the sun passes through thirteen constellations, not twelve. The Greeks chose to remove one of the original thirteen constellations from the Zodiac in order to accomplish their desire to have each sign rule for an even 30º of sky, so they selected Ophiuchus to be eliminated. It can only be because of his origins in Egypt as one of their most powerful dieties, on par with Osiris and Thoth, all of whom answered only to Ra. Mysteriously enough, just like Obeah is secret, hidden, and unknown, the "thirteenth constellation" of the Zodiac, Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer is secret, hidden, and unknown. About one person in twenty is an "Ophiuchus," and they don't even know it.....
The peoples of ancient times (most typically the Pythagoreans, but others as well) had a legend that a kind of Light, described as a "living fire," flowed through all living things. Guarding this Flame was the serpent Ophioneus, very similar in respects to his nearly same namesake Ophiuchus. He was said to lay coiled in the Waters of Life. If anyone obstructed or hindered the Light of the Flame, Ophioneus would rise out of the water like a monster and consume them. The Greek philosopher Pherecydes (circa 600-550 BC) wrote a great deal about Ophioneus, having obtained the doctrines from the Phoenicians, also known as Ophites (Greece was first colonized by Ophites, serpent worshippers from both Egypt and Phoenicia). The Ophites venerated a serpent by the deity-title Ab, sometimes rendered Ob and Ob Aur, meaning Father --- as in the procreator of All. They also had the watery serpent Leviathan or Thiavat, which is same as Ophioneus. All of this ties into Abaddon that appears in Revelations as the Angel of the Abyss. It is unclear if the forces of the Abyss are fully good or evil in any way. The Obic forces that guard the Light and keep it flowing apparently take it by whatever means necessary and return it back to where it belongs when a person fails to let it flow or obstructs it.....

Well as far as I know, the astrologists i have met refer to the 12 signs of the zodiac,
They say that the 13th sign is a mixture of scorpio and sagitarius combined.
I know a few that talk about the 13th sign, but are few. Although the explanation is quite interesting, and has to be considered. :) :D
EDIT: Since it is a mixture of 2 signs the ESENCE IS NOT NEW.

I found that looking at the charts of families that signs run thru them like this often also if you dont have any particular sign or elelment in your chart then your children will have it as balance .Check out the site www.astro.com free horoscope charts you get a reading each day based on the complete chart and every thursday the whole aspects of the chart , you can pay to join and have access all the time .Also it gives year ahead forcasts love signs and compatability charts with all types of chart casting and the asteriods and othe planetary bodies included if you wish a huge amount of info to keep you busy on there :D

theirs is not serious ASTROLOGY, it is superficial, meant to entertain people, same as magazines.
We have to dig into serious astrologists, like Liz Greene, if you are a beginer,, try reading SUN-SIGNS by LINDA GOODMAN, neither one talks about the thirteenth sign. would be a good idea to look in the Public library on the subject.
If there is material on it.
If you want to see some spiritual astrology, try reading HIDDEN MYSTERIES by OSHO,
a 233 small book that deals with the mysteries of Eastern Temples, Alchemy of pilgrimage,
occult science of the third Eye, transforming power of Idols, Astrology: the science of
cosmic Onenness, astrology : a door to religiousness.
Must be interesting what astrologist of the world have to say on this. Research needed. Would also be interesting to have a new astrological
chart made.

Liz Greene does charts thru astro.com check it out if you havent .Also linda goodmans sunsigns was the first astrology book i ever read .A friend of mine lent me gooberz and some other linda goodman books interesting reading .I liked the way she said that your name made into anagrams or using some or all letters from it said something about your personality .For example if oyur name could form the words not a liar or no liar etc it menat you could be trusted. Tony Blair ? That knocks that one on the head then .Pity because it seemed quiet a good system otherwise :D

I’ve been researching some of the symbols that appear in this thread. I think that serpents and reptiles have been covered by many, and for some reason I just decided to take a closer look at the EAGLE.
The Eagle permeates so much of our daily lives through symbolism, and I could fill 10 pages with examples, but I think that most people would immediately agree on this, and so I’ll skip right over pointing out the obvious.
Instead I’d like to focus more on who this Eagle is, and what he means.
I’d like to start by looking at the animal. There was a time where, in England, "EAGLE" referred specifically to the Golden Eagle. So, although the Eagle that floods the symbolism in America is supposedly the Bald Eagle, I feel as though the very source of Eagle symbolism comes from the Golden Eagle, starting with Aetos Dios – which I will come to later a little further down.
The Eagle is mainly an Old World animal, and only two species appear in North America; the Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagle. The scientific name for the Golden Eagle is Aquila Chrysaetos. (Christ?)
There are other species of Eagle that occur in North America.
The Steller Sea eagle, for example. Most juvenile Eagles look alike. It can be a bit of a nightmare differentiating between the various species until they moult into full adult plumage. Sometimes that can take five years..
